Forgotten Citrus Center Monument

 Forgotten Citrus Center Monument
The Forgotten Citrus Center Monument is a 15-foot tall concrete obelisk that has been standing since 1930. During the Great Depression a series of these landmarks were placed on, what were then, busy roads at the edge of Polk County surrounded by citrus groves. They were intended as welcome markers at entry points to the county. Sadly, there are only 3 left standing today and the citrus groves are no longer present.

This monument is located along Old Kissimmee Road in Davenport, Florida. This stretch of road between Osceola and Polk Counties was once part of the Lee-Jackson Highway, Dixie Highway, and the Central Florida Highway. It is now labeled the Old Tampa Highway and stretches from CR 532 to US 17-92, just a few miles south of I-4.

At this location on the Old Kissimmee Highway, it turns into the most amazing old antique red brick road that narrows into a dirt pathway with a series of small old houses with dirt driveways. The timeless feel is something you can't pass up and visitors never regret the detour off the highway to visit this historic monument. The location is absolutely beautiful, but take caution if you get passed Labor Camp Rd., which is an area reported to be somewhat rough for tourists.

If you look closely, you will notice that on one side of the monument the word "Citrus" is misspelled "Citurs" and remains that way today. At one point, in 2017, there was a vote to move this historical landmark to a more prominent location. However, it was voted down and remains in its original location.

The other two standing Citrus Center Monuments are located in Loughman, Florida and Lumberton, Florida.
