Polk County Historical Museum

 Polk County Historical Museum
Previously home to a 1908 courthouse, Polk County Historical Museum serves special events and plenty of learning opportunities.

It has a collection that displays natural and cultural objects that are related to Polk County and Central Florida. It represents the history from the pre Columbian to present day eras.

The library was first opened in 1940, and it still has one of the largest genealogical collections in the Southeast United States.

Along with the different exhibits there is the historic 1926 courtroom and other areas of the museum available for private and community rental.

There are 11 galleries that are permanent and 4 that will sometimes rotate. On the first floor there are 7 galleries that explore the people, places, and the events that have made an impact on Polk County. Located on the second floor of the History Center is a fully restored courtroom from 1908. Artifacts are on display that include the original pieces.

Along with the history of Polk County, there are kid friendly exhibits. Children visiting Legoland can enjoy the History Center with a slower pace. They are able to dress up as pioneers, produce puppet shows, and explore replicas of different homes from previous eras. There is also a special fossil exhibit that includes teeth from a megalodon shark, leg bones of a mastodon, skulls from a American Crocodile, and sabre tooth cat.

This is also a great place to enjoy the outdoors on a beautiful day. The Polk County History Center is equipped with a Heritage trail. Visitors can start a journey that explores many historic homes, vintage hotels, cemeteries, monuments, festivals, museums and more.

The admission is free.
