The Winter Haven Municipal Airport, which is also known as Gilbert Field, is rich in history and has been a primary flight training venue for the U.S. Air Force since 1951. Novice military aviators learn to fly at Gilbert Field and Preston Aviation Stearman Flight School is housed here for purposes of instruction, tours and aerial photography.
Tim Preston, who is the facility's Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), is a licensed Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) technician with more than 30 years of experience, is a Boeing-Stearman Model 75 expert who flies and instructs while his wife Peggy Preston handles other essential jobs to ensure everything stays on course.
Your tailwheel training could be part of a fun family vacation event or for licensed pilots with proficient skills. They offer tailwheel endorsement, high performance endorsement, spin training, proficiency training, FUN flight reviews, refresher trainings and flying just for fun. They also offer extensive Stearman training for those interested in purchasing a Stearman or have already purchased one for a WWII flying adventure.
These trainings last an average of 5 hours and foreign licensed pilots are exempt from TSA requirements to train there. Introductory flight pricing includes the instructor and no solo rentals are available. Since every pilot has different skill and experience levels, training times may vary.
Preston Aviation's website accommodates gift card purchases if you are interested in surprising your aviator friend or family member with a gift they will never forget. You can also purchase many t-shirts, ball caps and photos or videos of an unforgettable experience during a day of flight training.
